Category 1: The Enhanced Star

Effective April 1, 2016, new Enhance STAR applicants will need to register with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in order to receive the STAR credit which is in the form of a check.  To register please visit or call (518) 457-2016.
The eligibility criteria are the same for both the STAR credit and the STAR exemption.  You can't receive both the STAR credit and the exemption.

-  To receive the benefit, you must own your home and it must be your primary residence.
-  The total 2015 income of the owners and the owners' spouses who primarily reside at the property must not exceed
$86,000 (not including total IRA distributions) or less and one of the spouses or siblings be at least 65 years of age as of
    December 31, 2017.

Enhance STAR recipients that are already receiving the exemption must renew their Enhance STAR application every year with the Assessor's office by the taxable status date of May 1st, unless they are currently enrolled in the Income Verification Program (IVP).  Forms are available at the assessor's office or at RP-425-IVP.
Enhanced STAR benefit in tax year 2016 was $2,862. The new law also limits STAR benefits from increasing year-to-year to a maximum of 2% per annum.
